G20 Women's Empowerment

Geeta Rao Gupta, the US Ambassador-at-Large for Global Women’s Issues, arrived in India to participate in the G20 Ministerial Meeting on Women’s Empowerment. The meeting is being held in Gandhinagar, Gujarat from August 2 to 4.

Accompanied by Nancy Jackson, US Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, Vogelstein, Senior Advisor to the White House Gender Policy Council, and Jamille Bigio, Senior Gender Coordinator at USAID, Rao Gupta’s visit spans eight days, covering Gujarat, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.

In Gujarat, she will lead the US delegation to the G20 EMPOWER Conference and the G20 Ministerial Conference on Women’s Empowerment, both hosted by the Government of India.

The G20 Ministerial Conference, chaired by Union Minister of Women and Child Development Smriti Zubin Irani, will focus on women-led development and accelerate progress towards Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment under SDG: Goal 5.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will deliver a special video address at the start of the Ministerial Conference.

From Gujarat, Rao Gupta will travel to Mumbai to discuss gender equality priorities with private sector members and civil society, including economic participation, closing the gender digital divide, and combating gender-based violence.

In Bengaluru, she will deliver keynote remarks at the WEConnect International Asia Pacific Conference, engaging with women leaders and civil society organizations to promote women’s rights and empowerment in India.
