The Bhopal Municipal Corporation’s campaign against stray dogs has come under fire from animal rights activist and environmentalist Maneka Gandhi. Gandhi recently spoke with BMC Chairman Kishan Suryavanshi to voice her concern over the campaign and suggested that moving the dogs from one location to another could make them more ferocious, leading to an increase in dog bite cases. The civic body’s campaign aims to sterilize stray dogs to control their population, but despite the efforts, the number of stray dogs has yet to see a drop in the city.
The BMC spends around Rs 1.5 crore to control the menace of stray dogs and has three sterilization centers, one of which is yet to be started. Last year, around 8,500 dogs were sterilized in the city. It is important to consider the perspective of animal rights activists when carrying out campaigns against stray dogs or any other animals.
