The Power of Mentorship and Role Models
In India, women remain significantly underrepresented in business despite efforts from activists and the government. The issues of unequal pay and the gender pay gap persist stubbornly. Research indicates that unconscious bias and the lack of role models are two of the most influential factors contributing to this situation.
In our previous issue, we discussed unconscious bias, which refers to false assumptions based on race, gender, or other factors. Female entrepreneurs, from urban elites to poor women laborers, encounter unconscious bias regularly. Another major contributor to gender disparity is the lack of accessible role models.
Mentorship is a powerful way to tap into the advice and experience of skilled individuals. A mentor with valuable life lessons and significant achievements can help transform one’s journey and realize dreams. Starting this month, we are featuring master mentors from Prayaana as part of our C2C mission.
Unless we consciously discard unconscious bias and actively seek role models, closing the gender gap will remain a distant dream.
Happy Deepavali to our readers! As we exchange gifts and love this festive season, let’s remember to be ‘vocal for local’ while shopping and maintain safety by wearing masks and practicing social distancing.
