Sobhita Dhulipala, renowned for her role as Vaanathi in Mani Ratnam’s ‘Ponniyin Selvan,’ has opened up about prevailing beauty standards in the film industry. Speaking to The Quint, she fondly recalled how Deepika Padukone’s ‘South Indianness’ in her debut film ‘Om Shanti Om’ provided her comfort during her formative years, emphasizing the need to celebrate dusky skin tones “now more than ever.”

Dhulipala critically examined conventional beauty norms in the industry, expressing her disconnect as an audience member, stating, “There is a slightly colonial hangover when it comes to beauty.” She argued that actresses like Vyjayanthimala, Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Smita Patil, Priyanka Chopra, Tabu, and Vidya Balan, possessed charm, glamour, good looks, and strong personalities. According to her, these remarkable women demonstrated that physical appearance did not obstruct their path to success.

In terms of her career, Sobhita Dhulipala, who gained fame for her role in ‘Made In Heaven,’ recently appeared in the web series ‘The Night Manager 2,’ alongside Anil Kapoor and Aditya Roy Kapur.

Dhulipala’s insights into beauty standards shed light on the evolving perspective within the Indian film industry, emphasizing the importance of embracing diversity and challenging traditional notions of attractiveness.
