Amelie McCann, sister of missing Madeleine McCann, has spoken publicly for the first time since the disappearance of her sister 16 years ago. Madeleine went missing when she was just three years old while on a family vacation in Praia de Luz, Portugal, just nine days before her fourth birthday. Amelie, now 18 years old, lit a candle in memory of her sister at a vigil held in Rothley, Leicestershire, the McCann’s hometown. The ceremony was attended by family and close friends.

“It’s nice everyone is here together but it’s a sad occasion,” said Amelie at the vigil, while pictures of her missing sister were put up on railings. Amelie was accompanied by her friend Georgina who supported her while she read messages for Madeleine which were handed down to her from well-wishers.

The parents of the toddler, Kate and Gerry McCann, were also present at the vigil but chose to remain silent. The event was addressed by 84-year-old Brian Kennedy, uncle of Kate McCann, who said, “Kate and Gerry are very moved by the size of the group of people who turned up…even if it was bad news, in some ways, would give us some closure. But with no closure there is still hope.”
