Sarah Joseph is an award-winning writer from Kerala. She is also the leader of the feminist movement in Kerala. Let’s wish her a heartfelt happy birthday.

Sarah Joseph was born on 10 February 1946 to a conservative Christian family in Thrissur. She was married at the age of 15. Her passion for writing started in high school itself. She used to write poems and read them at poet meetings. These poems were appreciated by renowned poets of that generation like Vyloppilli Sreedhara Menon and Edasseri Govindan Nair.

Sarah Joseph later published three novels, which are Aalahayude Penmakkal, Mattathi, and Othappu. Her novel Aalahayude Penmakkal (Daughters of God the Father) won her three major awards – the Kendra Sahitya Akademi Award, the Kerala Sahitya Academy Award, and the Vayalar Award.

Sarah Joseph is also a well-known feminist movement leader and social activist. She founded the women’s group Manushi in the 1980s. With this group, she led protests over several decades in response to a wide range of crimes against women, including rape, trafficking, dowry deaths, and sexual slavery. She is widely respected and appreciated for both her literature and activist movements.
