Impacting Lives through Entrepreneurial Action

Entrepreneurs are a part and parcel of today’s globalised world. Their creativity, innovation and integrity have made this world reach Himalayan heights.

A social entrepreneur is a person who pursues novel applications that have the potential to solve social problems. This embryonic field is growing expeditiously.

Enactus is an international, non-profit organisation that aims at investing in students who undertake entrepreneurial action for others and create a better world for us all.

Enactus – Entrepreneurial. Action. Us.

“Helping others is the way we help ourselves”

Trailing these lines, Enactus with its all-encompassing, ubiquitous, collateral views and a gigantic family of over 70,500 students at 1700+ universities in 36 countries around the world, has been empowering underserved communities through entrepreneurial actions since 1975.

One of the prominent chapters of Enactus was established in 2016 at Kirori Mal College, University of Delhi. Enactus Kirori Mal is a family of over 70 students who apply business concepts to develop entrepreneurial projects that transform lives and shape a better, more sustainable world.

Currently, it is running 3 live projects, namely Project Dor, Project Syahi, Project JanBhoomi, and an initiative- Nirav.

Project Dor aims at improving the lives of a community of migrant women from Bihar and Jharkhand while also reviving the Indian traditional art of Tie and Dye by producing timeless classics like dupattas, cushion covers, and scarves. Dark Knight and Magenta Madness are two such products which are efficiently handcrafted by the community, who are the beneficiaries of the project.

Project Dor has also been able to create products from the quagmire of waste. Potlis are created from the defective and residual material, thereby making Dor a zero-waste brand.

This project has left an indelible impact on the lives of these underserved women, who are now self-reliant and have become independent entrepreneurs.

Project JanBhoomi endeavours to promote an organic lifestyle and to tackle the problems of land degradation and waste management.

It encourages flower composting as an alternative to chemical fertilisers which cause land degradation and eutrophication. In the past, JanBhoomi has sold flower compost, organic compost, and a gardening tool kit comprising five high-quality tools. In 2018, Project JanBhoomi also collaborated with the Government of Haryana to set up vermicomposting pits in over 75 villages of Palwal, Haryana and create impact at the grass-root level.

In India alone, more than 1.70 crore pens are discarded every month.

Project Syahi endeavours to achieve a plastic-free world by replacing plastic pens with pens made up of recycled paper with a seed attached to their rear end. These pens are beautifully handcrafted by a community of underserved women, thus giving them a source of livelihood, aiding their socio-economic development, and helping them break free from the chains of patriarchy.

What mental health needs is more sunlight, more candour, and more untamed conversation.

Nirav is an initiative that endeavours to provide online mental health services to those in need and to promote the cause of mental health. It also aims at de-stigmatising mental health issues. The key features of this initiative are its easy accessibility, pro-bono nature, and a certified board of professional psychologists.

All these projects aim at fulfilling the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Thus, Enactus Kirori Mal College is not only uplifting marginalised communities but also providing them with a sustainable source of livelihood, empowering them, and making them socially, economically and financially stable entrepreneurs.

To encapsulate, the students of Enactus Kirori Mal College are working with utmost dedication to bring about a positive impact using the power of entrepreneurial action. It gathers entrepreneurial minds and works for the betterment of people.

When dismal darkness descends,
