British food might have a reputation for being dull, but we excel at fish and chips. With so many chippies in the UK, finding the best can be tough. Luckily, the Observer has highlighted some of Britain’s top fish and chip shops to guide you.

In the Observer’s recent list of the 20 best fish and chip shops in the UK, one standout is in London.

Fish Central in Clerkenwell has been named one of Britain’s top 20 fish and chip spots. This family-run restaurant, open since 1968, has been a favorite of families, black cab drivers, and office workers. Despite its white tablecloths and oyster offerings, it serves excellent fish and chips.

Menu highlights include prawn cocktail, mushy peas, and cod fried in golden batter. You can order fish battered, fried in matzo meal, or grilled. Fish Central is a must-visit.

The Observer described Fish Central: “At lunch, you’ll see black-cab drivers, pensioners, and office friends; on weekends, the atmosphere is lively with staff singing happy birthday to locals.”

Other top fish and chip shops in the UK, according to the Observer, include Harbour Lights in Falmouth, Cornwall, The Cod’s Scallops in Birmingham, and Frankie’s Fish and Chips in Brae, Scotland.
