Mamata Kharb was the former captain of the Indian Women’s Hockey team. She scored the winning goal that got India Gold Medal in the 2002 Commonwealth games.

Often called the ‘Golden Girl’ of India, Mamta Kharab is a former captain of the Indian Women’s National Hockey team. She was born on 26 January 1982 in Rohtak, Haryana. Mamta’s native village is Givan in the Rohtak district of Haryana. She did her schooling at Senior Secondary School Rohtak, Haryana. Mamta’s father Haripal Singh is a primary teacher.

Born in a middle-class family with seven children, Mamata had to struggle a lot to reach where she is right now. Mamta Kharab is a graduate of MD University, Rohtak. She has played several National and International Hockey matches/championships for India. She was the best player and the best scorer in the Junior Asia Cup hockey tournament held in Malaysia. In this tournament, India won the bronze medal. In 2002, She played a key role in India’s victory in the CommonWealth Games held in Manchester. She scored the goal that won the gold medal for India after 32 years.

In a four Nation tournament in 2005, Mamta and her team won a silver medal. The same year she played in the Indira Gandhi International Gold Cup Women’s Hockey Tournament and bagged another silver medal for her team. She claimed another silver medal with the team at the 2006 Commonwealth Games

Because of her best performance in hockey, the Haryana Government decorated her with the prestigious award: the “Bhim Award”. In 2003, the Government of India awarded her with the “Arjun Award”.

The character of Komal Chautala from the movie Chak De India is inspired by Mamta Kharb. Mamta Kharb is not only an inspiration to the girls of Haryana but to all the girls in India.
