Practical Tips to Support your Career Progression
Advancing your career might look different for you when compared to someone else. With that said, it doesn’t matter how new to a role you might be; having a goal is one of the best ways for you to move forward with confidence. Whether it’s a promotion, moving to a different team, or even getting a new job entirely, there are a few things you can do to try and prioritise your career moving forward.

Set Goals
The first thing you need to do is try and set goals. Some companies tend to ask their team to fill in career development plans where you have to write down what you would like out of your career and where you want to be in a few years. They will also encourage you to understand the skills you have and where you expect to be moving forward. Even if your company doesn’t ask you to work on a plan, it’s still good for you to think about your progression this way. It may be that you try and hit bigger targets along the way or that you move to a bigger goal overall. You don’t have to be really structured in your thinking like you would be if you were undertaking a full career development plan, but at the end of the day, it is a good way for you to set goals and for you to try and reach them.
Take Note of Opportunities
When it comes to the practical side of things and what you need to do in order to progress in your career, you have to take note of the assessment opportunities that are available. It may be that you look at internal vacancies and that you begin to search for jobs that are available outside of the business. You can do this to find out if you want to progress internally or if you need to try and find other ways to move up the ladder. If you have decided that you need to look elsewhere, then it may be that you need to try and take note of any training opportunities that could help you along the way. You can take online training courses, if you want, so be mindful of that.
Book Regular Meetings
Another thing you need to do is try and book regular meetings with your line manager if you can. Part of their job is to try and support you, so make sure that you aren’t anxious about raising this topic with them. They can work with you to make sure that you understand your capabilities and how they can help. If you aren’t doing this already, then you should try and make sure that you are having meetings once a month. These meetings should last for roughly an hour, and they will give you the chance to feel better and more confident in what you are doing. They can also help you to feel confident in discussing things and what you need to do to try and stop yourself from being negatively impacted at work.
Development is Everything
Companies are often looking to send employees on training courses as this will help them to encourage the development of staff. Take a look at your company’s intranet and also ask your line manager to see if they can provide you with some training. If you are given the chance to take part in any kind of training, then this will help you a lot. Be sure to accept the offer, as it may be that you end up being put in a better position to try and be given a promotion. Take note of any achievements you might have gotten, and also see if it is possible for you to continue benefiting yourself as you move forward. Having a document that details your success will come in very handy if you need to have performance reviews, and it will also help you to negotiate a promotion or a pay rise. Things like this will help you to showcase your professional development, and it will also help you to be a real asset to the company you are working for. If you know that your career needs to take you elsewhere, then this is fine, just make sure that you are not overlooking the things you can do to support yourself in the interim. This is the best way for you to get to where you need to be, and you would be surprised at what a difference it can make.
Development is not always a straight path, either. Sometimes, you may need to think outside of the box and make a lateral move to unlock the potential for further growth in your career. With the help of a Spanish language tutor, for instance, you can begin developing skills in another language, which could help you work in another market, or even look at overseas work as a potential path.
