Australia witnessed unprecedented TV viewership as the Matildas competed in the Women’s World Cup semi-final against England, making it the nation’s most-watched TV event ever. Data revealed that an astounding 11.5 million individuals, out of a population of around 25 million, tuned in to witness the Lionesses secure a 3-1 victory in Sydney. The average audience throughout the match was 7.13 million.

Channel Seven, the country’s free-to-air host broadcaster, announced that this match marked the highest viewership for any program since the establishment of the current rating system in 2001. Channel Seven’s head of network sport, Lewis Martin, expressed pride in the Matildas’ performance and the historical significance of this viewership milestone.

Despite the semi-final loss, the Matildas still have an upcoming match, contending for third place against Sweden in Brisbane on Saturday. On the other side, England is set to face Spain in the final showdown in Sydney on Sunday.
