The History of Christmas Day Celebration on December 25
Christmas is celebrated across the globe in many ways. Some decorate the Christmas tree in their house, some eat plenty of good food, Plum cakes, and sweets, some spend a lot of time with family, some sing and dance but do you even know how Christmas started? Let me tell you the story about it.
There are various theories which are justifying the reason for the Christmas celebration on the 25th of December. In the early years of Christianity, people didn’t even celebrate Christmas. Christmas marks the birth of Jesus Christ and people were confused as to when Jesus was born. It was rather a festival of Saturnalia that was celebrated on the 25th of December by the pagans of Rome in the honor of God Saturn and people used to gather to exchange gifts and decorate trees. It was during the time of Roman Emperor Constantine when Christmas happened to be celebrated on the 25th of December. Many believed that Emperor Constantine did so because he was the first Christian Roman Emperor and since celebrations already took place on the 25th of December in the name of Saturnalia. He probably thought of branding Christan and Pagan traditions. A few years later in 350 AD Pope Julius officially declared that the birth of Jesus Christ would be celebrated on the 25th of December. Have you ever wondered why we call Christmas “Xmas’ ‘ sometimes? That’s because X is the Greek letter Chi which in short was used for Christ’s.
Santa Claus plays a very important role in Christmas. Children are eagerly waiting for gifts from Santa. Some shopkeepers dress themselves as Santa Claus and make children happy by giving them gifts. The first decorated Christmas tree was placed in Riga, Latvia in 1510. The first Christmas tree of Germany was decorated with wafers, sweets, apples, gingerbread, and so on. Even different types of trees are used in various countries. It is a surprising fact that Christmas trees help in removing not only dust but also pollen from the air. Nowadays, artificial trees are used as well. Christmas trees usually grow for about 15 years before they are sold.
In many ways, people make this day special. People visit Church and participate in different religious practices, decorate their home with lights, flowers, and bring gifts for children, and many more. Christmas is a time to remember Jesus and take out some time for his worship. Christmas is celebrated with a big heart for the poor and needy people. Many people help these people and become their Santa. Indeed, Christmas is a festival of joy, sharing, caring, and calls for a grand celebration. We all can become a Santa for someone and it will make our soul happy, also the person will be thankful to us. Sharing is caring. If you want to receive something, you have to give it first. Merry Christmas!
