Women Make Strides in Hollywood and Beyond

2024 was a remarkable year for women, marked by significant achievements in Hollywood, sports, science, and academia. For the first time, women made up 42% of lead roles in the top 100 grossing films, matching the number of male-led films. This milestone was accompanied by numerous other successes, setting the stage for a promising 2025.

A New Record in Hollywood

According to a recent study, female-led films reached 42% of the top 100 grossing films, a notable achievement that highlights the growing recognition of women’s contributions to the film industry. Dr. Stacy L. Smith, an expert on diversity and inclusion in entertainment, noted, “We have always known that female-identified leads would make money.”

Women’s Achievements Beyond Hollywood

Women made significant strides in various fields, including:

• Politics: Women held 31% of seats in the US Congress, a record high.
• Business: Female CEOs led 12% of Fortune 500 companies, up from 8% in 2023.
• Sports: Women’s professional sports leagues saw increased viewership and sponsorship. Tigst Assefa set a new women’s world record marathon time, while Dong Hong Juan became the first female climber to complete all 14 peaks above 8000 meters.
• STEM: Women comprised 34% of the STEM workforce, a 5% increase from 2023. Christina Hammock Koch was selected for the Artemis 2 spaceflight, making her the first woman to travel to the moon.
• Academia: Claudia Goldin became the first solo woman to win the Nobel Prize in Economics.

The Road Ahead

While progress has been made, there is still work to be done. The decline in representation for women of color and the underrepresentation of women over 45 are concerns that need to be addressed. Additionally, the disparity behind the scenes in Hollywood remains, with 70% of top films featuring 10+ men in key roles, compared to only 8% for women.

• Increased Focus on Intersectionality: There will be a growing emphasis on addressing the unique challenges faced by women of color, women with disabilities, and other marginalized groups.
