Women Mastering DIY Skills to Save Money

A new survey conducted by Opinium in March found that over half of the people have developed DIY skills to offset the rising cost of living. The survey, commissioned by Experian, discovered that some have even used their new-found expertise to earn extra money. Learning DIY has enabled many people to save around £500 per year, according to the report.
Alice Hainsworth, a 44-year-old consultant from London, is one such person. She wanted to give her bathroom a makeover but was shocked at the cost of hiring a professional. So, she decided to take up the challenge herself and re-tile the bathroom. Although she was nervous, she found the process surprisingly easy and rewarding. Alice managed to save at least £2,000 by doing the job herself, money which she has put aside for a rainy day and a Center Parcs holiday with her daughter.
In addition to home repairs, the survey revealed that people were learning skills such as painting and decorating, car maintenance, gardening, and sewing. Some were even attempting DIY hairdressing, which typically saved them over £500 per year. Those who turned their newfound skills into a paid side hustle were earning around an additional £350 per year on average.
As bills continue to rise, more and more people, particularly women, are exploring ways to save money. Learning DIY skills is one way to do that. It not only saves money, but it also boosts confidence and enables people to tackle other jobs, such as assembling flat-pack furniture.
