History of World Thinking Day

The origins of World Thinking Day trace back to 1926 when delegates convened at Camp Edith Macy in New York for the fourth World Conference of the World Association of Girl Guides and Girl Scouts (WAGGGS). Following the conference, delegates unanimously proposed the establishment of a dedicated day for guides and girl Scouts, coinciding with the shared birthday of Lord Baden-Powell, the Scout and Guide movement’s founder, and his wife, Olave.

In 1932, a Belgian delegate proposed the idea of fundraising for the World Thinking Day Fund by encouraging members to donate a penny. Lord Baden-Powell endorsed the initiative, urging all guides and Girl Scouts worldwide to contribute a penny, as it was sufficient to purchase a loaf of bread at the time. The name of the event was officially changed to “World Thinking Day” during the Dubai Conference in 1999.
