Christmas Memories

Christmas morning really is a different feeling from a normal day. All the lights hung up in the rooms, the Christmas tree decorated with ornaments, the smell of freshly baked muffins & cookies made by my mom to celebrate, make it special. We’d all watch the Home Alone movies that would make my day. One of my fondest memories from Christmas is when I went to a mall during my childhood in Africa. There was a big Santa Claus, lion and Mickie the Mouse dancing in the area. My 4-year-old self could not resist going up and dancing with them. That moment holds such a special place in my heart as I had never felt this much adrenaline and happiness that I lost myself in the moment. I literally almost begged my mother to let me stay for more time, but Mickie and Santa clearly became tired from my excitement! Luckily my uncle caught it on camera for me to cherish forever. Going home all giddy and jolly and never forgetting such a memorable experience was what made Christmas this special to me.

Growing up in a Christian dominant society, I was always keen on learning about why Christmas was such a special occasion to them. My landlord’s daughters would sit down with me and read me stories about how Jesus Christ was born and the shepherd visiting them with flocks of sheep and many more. The story just never grew old to me. Every year would pass by but I would still read the story like it’s brand new. I still remember going to the church on Christmas with my nanny & family friends and seeing the festivities that would bring joy and peace to my heart. Long gone are those days, but Christmas is still a day that holds a special place in my heart.

As Alexander Smith once said, “Christmas is the day that holds all time together.”
