How Can Busy Moms Do to Make Evenings Feel a Little Easier?

Unfortunately, nearly everyone is dealing with that busyness trap, and if you’re a parent, well, the busyness trap just feels a lot worse. Like, a lot worse. And so weeknights can feel so oddly intense, just go ahead and think about it; one minute it’s late afternoon, and the next minute somebody’s hungry, somebody needs help with homework, somebody can’t find their clothes they want to wear the next day, and then there’s something sticky on the counter for no clear reason, and then you need to cook dinner too.

So yeah, for a lot of busy moms, weeknights really can start feeling less like family life and more like everybody just trying to make it to bedtime, but then it’s just rinse and repeat for the next day, too, well, until the weekend. And that’s how it is for years and years. So, there’s always this rush, there’s always things to do, as a mom, you’re probably doing most of the unpaid labor in the house, and still also juggling your career too. Of course, this can be a lot. But is there any way to take off the pressure, even a little?

Stop Treating Every Weeknight Like a Chance to Catch Up on Life

Which, yes, that sounds absolutely horrible to say, but just bear with the explanation for just a second. It’s true because so many moms seem to carry this silent expectation that the evening is when everything’s supposed to get sorted. Think about it, there’s dinner, tidying, lunches, school stuff, baths, emails, laundry, life admin, maybe texting somebody back, maybe remembering that form that was meant to be signed two days ago, and all of it somehow gets shoved into this one stretch of time when everybody’s already tired and a bit fed up.

But seriously, here, it’s no wonder weeknights feel awful sometimes. Because the problem isn’t always that there’s too much to do in life overall, it’s that way too much of it gets mentally dumped onto the evening. What can wait? Maybe everything shouldn’t be done in one night. What can be done this weekend?

Maybe Consider Making Easier Meals

Be it for lunch or breakfast, if you meal prep for your family, the same can be said for dinner. Honestly, dinner, especially, because sometimes there’s pressure there to make a good meal. Like, dinner can make or break the whole mood of the evening. And yes, to a degree, that is true, especially if everybody’s already tired and hungry and somebody still has to stand there figuring out what to cook from scratch, that can feel like the final insult of the day.

But there’s so many easy recipes out there, some where you can throw a bunch of random ingredients into an Instant Pot, there’s easy pastas, you could even take shortcuts like getting an already prepared barbecue pulled pork, rotisserie chicken, or even premade side dishes. Usually, the price difference isn’t all that big compared to making it from scratch, and you save so much money, too.

Consider Making One Part of the Evening More Predictable

Now, with that part said, weeknights usually feel worse when everything feels mentally loose and all over the place. Well, usually it’s the constant little “what next, what now, who still needs what”  sort of stress, sort of way. That’s the part that gets exhausting.

Basically, you feel like you’re on standby, and who can relax when they have that feeling, right? So, what can you do that’s a little more predictable here? Ideally, a small routine. Like, maybe clothes are always laid out before anybody sits down. Maybe baths happen in the same order every night. Well, it’s up to you, and these are just a couple of examples, but you get the idea.
