International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th to recognize the accomplishments of women in various areas, including social, economic, cultural, and political fields. This day is celebrated globally, and in some countries, it is even a public holiday. Women in Jammu and Kashmir have numerous success stories to share with the world, thanks to the abrogation of Article 370. In 2018, the Indian Supreme Court declared that Article 370 had become permanent since the state constituent assembly no longer existed. To overcome this legal obstacle, the Indian government made Article 370 “inoperative,” even though it still exists in the constitution.

Since then, women in the region have become symbols of success, making significant contributions to the region’s development. The government has empowered them by providing major roles in administration and police, as well as helping them become successful entrepreneurs. Special scholarship schemes for meritorious young female students have enabled them to pursue their dreams.

Over the past three years, Jammu and Kashmir’s women have been an inspiration to their counterparts nationally and internationally, proving their detractors wrong through their hard work and determination. The UMEED scheme of J&K Rural Livelihood Mission (JKRLM) 2019 has also been working tirelessly to engage women from marginalized sections of society in gainful livelihood ventures. Centrally sponsored women-centric welfare schemes have shown them the way, and Panchayat Raj Institutions have been instrumental in creating awareness about women’s empowerment schemes at the grassroots level.

It is a source of hope to see the progress and achievements of women in Jammu and Kashmir, particularly on International Women’s Day. The abrogation of Article 370 and the government’s efforts to empower women have created new opportunities and possibilities for women in the region. It is crucial to continue supporting and promoting women’s empowerment in all parts of the world. Women have made significant contributions to society and must be recognized and celebrated.
