Juneteenth Wine Honors Aunties in African-American Culture

For Juneteenth, a company has launched a special wine to celebrate the important role of aunties in African-American culture. Juneteenth, observed on June 19, marks the end of slavery in the US after the Emancipation Proclamation was enforced in Texas in 1865. It became a federal holiday in 2021, focusing on African-American heritage.

The new wine, named Auntie Whine, is a rosé described with “hints of cocoa butter” and a smooth, silky texture. Although details about its blend and production remain undisclosed, the wine aims to capture the spirit of aunties.

Penelope Vasquez from Mother New York explained the connection: “Aunties are central figures in Black families and communities. They bring joy, personality, and warmth, especially during summer gatherings.”

The name “Auntie Whine” might suggest complaining, but Vasquez clarified: “’Whining’ refers to a dance with subtle, sensual movements, common in Caribbean Black culture. It’s like how an auntie might dance gracefully with her favorite wine.”

Some might worry about stereotyping older women as excessive drinkers, but Vasquez stressed: “This isn’t about overindulgence. It’s about creating a joyful atmosphere where women can dance to great music and enjoy a refreshing drink.”

Auntie Whine celebrates the unique presence and contributions of aunties in African-American culture, particularly during gatherings and celebrations like Juneteenth.
