Lessons from 106-Year-Old Shirley Hodes and 103-Year-Old Ruth Sweedler
106-year-old Shirley Hodes and 103-year-old Ruth Sweedler, the oldest living sisters in the US, have shared their secrets to staying mentally sharp at such an advanced age. Hodes and Sweedler both agreed that staying active, building connections, and appreciating what you have are key factors.
Hodes credited her love of reading as the best thing for the mind, while Sweedler loved working and staying active in her local community, including in various Jewish organizations. They both emphasized the importance of being engrossed in what you do and making full use of your talents.
The sisters also highlighted the significance of family and good marriage. Sweedler said, “It’s so wonderful to love and be loved,” while Hodes acknowledged the importance of the people around you, including friends, relatives, and family.
Both sisters expressed gratitude for what they have and the importance of appreciating it. Sweedler continues to find joy in reading despite limited mobility, and Hodes shared that although she has faced illnesses and problems, she is in decent health and thankful for a wonderful life.
