She championed breast-conserving surgery and raised concerns about hormone replacement treatment for menopause in women. As the Chief Visionary Officer and founder of the Dr. Susan Love Foundation for Breast Cancer Research, her organization made significant contributions to medical research, including the development of AI-aided ultrasound handheld devices for underserved communities, improving access to mammography.
She and her wife, Dr. Helen Cooksey, won a landmark case in 1993, becoming the first gay couple to jointly adopt a baby. This milestone also paved the way for the legalization of same-sex marriages in Massachusetts, where they resided.
