Indian economist Jayati Ghosh won the John Kenneth Galbraith Award for 2023 from the Agricultural & Applied Economics Association. The award honors her breakthrough discoveries in economics and contributions to humanity. Jayati Ghosh received the award formally with the citation on Tuesday. The award is named after influential economist John Kenneth Galbraith and recognizes his achievements in research, education, and public service, embodying the spirit of agricultural economists. Ghosh is one of only three Indian economists to receive this award. Her research focuses on developmental and human-centric economics, important for policymaking in the post-pandemic world. Her work emphasizes social protection for workers, financial inclusion, and active labor market policies.

She is currently a professor at the University of Massachusetts Amherst and serves on the high-level advisory board for effective multilateralism established by the United Nations Secretary-General. Ghosh has written extensively on various topics, including the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic in India, women workers in the informal economy, and the aftermath of India’s demonetization decision. Her work on developmental economics and concern for gender issues are particularly relevant in the current global economic downturn and debt crises. Economists and politicians recognize the importance of her people-centric development approach in policy-making.
