For decades, Air India has been known for its distinctive uniform: sarees for female flight attendants. However, change may be on the horizon. Air India is planning to introduce new uniforms for its crew, and sarees might no longer be part of the attire, according to sources.

Renowned designer Manish Malhotra, tasked with overseeing the new look, refrained from commenting due to a non-disclosure agreement (NDA). Nevertheless, insiders have revealed that while the saree might take a back seat, the new uniforms will offer traditional options.

“One official, speaking on condition of anonymity, mentioned that churidars will be one of the choices for women, while male crew members will wear suits,” reports another official. “The sarees might be entirely removed from the uniform set.”

However, there is some uncertainty regarding the sarees’ fate. “Various options were proposed, including ready-to-wear sarees that resemble traditional sarees but are not draped like them. However, the management has yet to finalize their decision,” the second official added.

Air India has not officially commented on this matter. The potential discontinuation of sarees may disappoint those who appreciate the garment, as sarees have experienced a resurgence in popularity in recent years.

Historically, Air India’s female crew wore skirts, jackets, and hats until 1962 when the late JRD Tata introduced sarees. These sarees were initially sourced from Binny Mills.

While the uniform may change, the airline’s new livery will retain its colors: deep red, aubergine, and gold. Additionally, after the merger with Vistara, the latter’s cabin crew will adopt Air India’s attire.

The airline’s new crew uniforms are set to debut following the delivery of the A350 aircraft, which is expected to arrive next month.
