Elderly women’s climate win in Switzerland: Historic legal victory

The European Court of Human Rights (ECtHR) said Switzerland isn’t doing enough about climate change. A group of older Swiss women called KlimaSeniorinnen said this was putting them in danger during heatwaves. The court agreed, saying Switzerland didn’t have clear plans to reduce greenhouse gases or fight climate change.

The President of the ECtHR, Siofra O’Leary, said Switzerland’s lack of action on climate change is hurting people now and in the future.

Switzerland’s government said they care about the environment and will try harder to reduce emissions. They will also think about what to do next after looking at the court’s decision.

KlimaSeniorinnen was very happy with the court’s decision. It took them nine years to win this case. Experts think this will make other countries take climate change more seriously.

Some people wanted the court to do more, but they agree it’s a good start. Greta Thunberg, a famous climate activist, said governments must do more to fight climate change.

This shows that courts can make governments do more about climate change. It also tells other countries they need to protect the environment and the people who live in it better.
