Women Shine Bright: Panjab University’s Convocation Celebrates Female Excellence
In a remarkable display of talent and achievement, women took center stage at the 70th convocation of Panjab University (PU). With an astounding 71 percent of all degrees and a staggering 80 percent of gold medals, women proved their exceptional capabilities.
According to Renu Vig, the vice chancellor of PU, a total of 497 Ph.D. degrees were conferred, with 325 women and 172 men receiving this prestigious honor. Additionally, 72 undergraduate degrees were awarded, with 62 women and 10 men emerging as outstanding achievers. Among the postgraduate degrees, 239 women and 74 men stood out as toppers, accounting for 313 degrees.
The exemplary performance continued with the gold medalists, as 107 undergraduate students proudly received this accolade. Of these winners, an impressive 96 were women, showcasing their brilliance. Furthermore, in the postgraduate category, 101 women and 36 men were honored with gold medals for their exceptional academic accomplishments.
The convocation also highlighted the regional distribution of scholarly excellence. Punjab led the way with 182 Ph.D. awardees, followed closely by Haryana with 115, and Himachal Pradesh with 70. Additionally, Chandigarh witnessed 73 scholars being recognized, while a deserving candidate from Ethiopia was awarded a Ph.D.
During the ceremony, four individuals were honored with the prestigious PU Rattan awards. Notable among them were Dr. Rattan Singh Jaggi, recipient of the PU Gyan Rattan, Professor Veena Tandon, who received the PU Vigyan Rattan, and Irshad Kamil, recognized with the PU Sahitya Ratna. Rakesh Bharti Mittal, the vice chairman of Bharti Enterprises, was awarded the PU Udyog Ratna.
