Canadian tennis sensation Bianca Andreescu made a remarkable start at the French Open 2023, delivering a stunning victory over two-time Grand Slam champion Victoria Azarenka in the opening round of the women’s singles on Tuesday, May 30.

Despite losing the first set and facing a deficit in the second, the 22-year-old staged an impressive comeback, triumphing with a score of 2-6, 6-3, 6-4 on Court Simonne-Mathieu.

Andreescu, who previously reached a career-high ranking of No.3 in 2019 after her US Open triumph, revealed that her beloved grandmother had expressed her desire for another major win. It was her grandmother’s words that served as a motivating force for Andreescu, pushing her to elevate her game against Azarenka, who had reached the Australian Open quarterfinals earlier this year.

Opening up about her emotional journey during the match, Andreescu shared, “I started thinking about my grandmother because she’s getting old, and I’m very close to her. She said, ‘Bianca, I really want to watch you win another major.’ So I had that in the back of my head when I was down 3-1. I started to get emotional too. At that point, something just came out of me, and I started playing better.”

Recognizing the need for a change in strategy, Andreescu urged herself to be bold, resulting in an improved serve and return game. She expressed her satisfaction with her fighting spirit, stating, “My fighting spirit is back, so that feels nice.”

Having broken a three-match losing streak, Andreescu now looks forward to her second-round clash with fellow Canadian Emma Navarro on Thursday, June 1. Her remarkable comeback and determination make her a force to be reckoned with in the upcoming matches of the tournament.
