Deepika, a drag-flicker from Hisar, expressed her delight at being selected as one of the drag-flickers in the Indian women’s hockey team for the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou. Her selection came as a pleasant surprise to her and her family, who have been unwavering in their support of her hockey career despite societal norms in conservative communities.

Deepika’s journey into hockey is a unique one. In 2012, she first picked up a hockey stick while en route to wrestling practice with her brother. Over the years, her dedication and hard work have propelled her from these humble beginnings to the national women’s hockey team.

During her early days in hockey, Deepika faced criticism, but her family shielded her from negativity. She recounted that her father ensured that the criticisms didn’t reach her ears. After her participation in the sub-junior National Championships in 2017, her family’s encouragement and belief in her grew stronger.

Deepika began her journey with the junior Indian women’s hockey team as a forward, participating in various tournaments. Her recent achievements include representing India at the FIH hockey women’s junior World Cup in 2021 and winning gold at the women’s junior Asia Cup.

Despite tough competition for a spot on the team, Deepika was thrilled when she learned about her selection for the Asian Games. She admitted to feeling nervous initially but credited Chief Coach Janneke Schopman and senior players for keeping her grounded.

Her father’s excitement upon learning about her selection was palpable, as he had some sleepless nights processing the news. Deepika acknowledged that her father had his doubts about her selection but expressed immense pride in her accomplishments.

Deepika highlighted the technical guidance she has received from former India drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh during the camp. She mentioned that they have been working on various aspects of drag flicking, which will be valuable in match situations at the Asian Games.

Deepika looks forward to contributing to India’s performance at the Asian Games as one of the team’s drag flick options. She emphasized that she doesn’t feel pressured to score from penalty corners and appreciates her teammates’ support in allowing her to focus on her skills.
