Sabrina Siddiqui, a prominent Muslim American journalist, made headlines when she posed a question to Prime Minister Modi during a joint press conference with President Joe Biden at the White House. In her query, Siddiqui asked about the measures taken by the Indian government to protect the rights of minorities and ensure freedom of speech.
PM Modi responded emphatically, defending India’s democratic values and his government’s commitment to inclusive growth and trust among all citizens. He stressed that India, like the United States, upholds democracy as an integral part of its identity, enshrined in the constitution. Discrimination based on caste, creed, or religion has no place in India, according to the Prime Minister, who reiterated the principles of “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, and Sabka Prayas” as the guiding force behind his government’s actions.
This exchange marked a rare occasion as PM Modi had not held a press conference since assuming office in 2014, with his only previous appearance in 2019 being question-free. Press conferences involving world leaders at the White House are tightly controlled, with pre-selected reporters from both domestic and international media allowed to ask a limited number of questions.
Sabrina Siddiqui, currently a White House reporter for The Wall Street Journal, is known for her extensive coverage of the Biden presidency. Prior to joining The Wall Street Journal, she worked at The Guardian, where she reported on the White House and the 2016 presidential election. Siddiqui holds a degree from Northwestern University and resides in Washington, D.C., with her husband.
