In a recent revelation by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), the Chief of the National Commission for Women, Rekha Sharma, highlighted that the surge in FIRs related to crimes against women does not necessarily indicate an increase in crime rates. Instead, it signifies a positive development—more women are coming forward to report such incidents.

Sharma emphasized that the data does not suggest a rise in crime but rather an encouraging trend of increased reporting by women. The NCRB data specifically shows a rise in the number of FIRs registered, especially in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.

The Chief of the National Commission for Women clarified that the data focuses solely on FIRs and does not delve into the subsequent legal proceedings, such as the number of charge sheets filed. Sharma urged law enforcement agencies to promptly register FIRs when women file complaints, emphasizing the importance of encouraging reporting.

Viewing this trend as a positive change, Sharma encouraged women to speak out and file complaints, assuring them that if local law enforcement does not respond adequately, they should reach out to the National Commission for Women.

Sharma also addressed the issue of domestic violence against women, highlighting the need for a societal shift in mindset. She stressed that societal responsibility plays a crucial role in curbing domestic violence. Without a change in the family and societal mindset, no law can effectively address the safety of women within their homes.

The NCRB data for 2022 revealed a total of 4,45,256 cases of crimes against women, averaging almost 51 FIRs every hour—an increase from 2021 (4,28,278 cases) and 2020 (3,71,503 cases). The crime rate against women per lakh population was reported at 66.4, with charge-sheeting in such cases recorded at 75.8. These statistics highlight the urgency for societal change and the need for continued efforts to ensure the safety and equality of women.

In conclusion, the data suggests a positive shift in the societal approach toward reporting crimes against women, emphasizing the importance of addressing the root causes of such incidents for lasting change.
