Swiss teachers are expressing concern over a troubling trend in schools, where a significant number of children are attending class while wearing diapers due to a lack of toilet training. Dagmar Rosler, head of the Swiss Federation of Teachers, noted that some children as old as 11 are still relying on diapers, which is worrisome. Many kids have become so accustomed to this convenient but unsanitary method that they show no interest in changing their habits.
The average age for toilet training, according to the Mayo Clinic, is between 18 and 24 months, but some parents are avoiding this crucial milestone. Educational scientist Margrit Stamm believes that parents are allowing diapers because they offer convenience, but this sends the wrong message. The increasing number of diaper-wearing children has put a burden on teachers who are forced to assist with changing soaked diapers. Teachers argue that parents should take responsibility and ensure that their school-aged children are no longer dependent on diapers.
While this issue is prevalent in Switzerland, similar problems have been reported in Buffalo, New York. The Buffalo Teachers Federation has highlighted the lack of policies or procedures to address the issue, resulting in accidents and teasing among classmates. While some cases involve children with special needs, teachers argue that it is not their role to change diapers and that it detracts from the educational environment.
