Summer brings both the joy of flaunting lovely dresses and the challenge of dealing with intense heat, which can lead to sweating, rashes, sunburn, and fatigue. To prevent dehydration, it’s important to drink an adequate amount of water. But should you drink water even when you’re not thirsty? Dr. Amrendra Pathak, a Senior Consultant in the Urology Department at Sir Gangaram Hospital in New Delhi, shares his insights.
Dr. Pathak recommends consuming 2 to 3 liters of water daily during the summer season to keep your body hydrated and reduce the risk of dehydration. He explains that our body signals thirst to the brain when it needs water. Drinking water only when you’re thirsty is more beneficial than forcing yourself to drink when you’re not.
Drinking water without thirst can be counterproductive and potentially harmful to your body. However, it’s important to note that drinking sufficient water is crucial to avoid complications like kidney stones. Individuals with kidney-related issues should aim to drink at least 3 liters of water per day as it helps flush out kidney stones through urine. Dr. Pathak emphasizes the importance of drinking water in small amounts but frequently.
Apart from preventing dehydration, staying hydrated with water brings various benefits. It boosts physical energy, relieves headaches, improves digestion, prevents constipation, and even impacts your mood positively by reducing mood swings and promoting a calm and satisfied feeling.
